Gerard Cunningham

Gerard Cunningham worked for almost 30 years in the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in different roles including information technology, environmental assessment and reporting, terminology, data management, access to information, networking, capacity building and support to multilateral processes such as the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA).

He has been involved with the organisation of global conferences such as the Infoterra Congress, the Eye on Earth (EoE) Summit, UNEA and the UNEA Science-Policy Forum. His work at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has taken him to over 100 countries and he has an in-depth knowledge of the problems facing developing countries across the broad spectrum of environmental reporting obligations, particularly the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

His current interests are focused on data issues to support reporting on the SDGs, strengthening the science-policy interface, and building capacities of policy-makers to participate effectively in multilateral processes to support the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. He is a chartered engineer and holds masters degrees in Computer Science and Business Administration from Trinity College Dublin and United States International University respectively.
